  • How we make $10,000 a month from our e-newsletters

E-NewsletterWe measure all of our marketing and the most cost effective are e-newsletters. They don't take more than an hour to construct yet they still generate around $10,000 a month. It's not by chance though, I've literally spent years researching the best ways to write e-newsletters and to follow is the way that I do it:

    1. Say their name. Your e-newsletter system should be able to address the person by their first name such as "Hi John!" because this will encourage them to read further and feel that you are talking to them directly.
    2. Keep it short.  Too many people write e-newlstters that are like novels.  Research shows that people look at it and then quickly delete them. Reasons include, they don't have the time or they're not interested in reading something long. We keep the items in our newsletter down to one or two sentences.
    3. Say something interesting. It's crucial that your readers' interest is captured as soon as possible. The very first title they read in your newsletter should make them think "I might check that out later" and not "This is boring, delete". We always start our e-newsletter with an "Entertain" section that will have something like a video of a cat doing morse code which lot's of people want to see.
    4. Add value. E-newsletters, like blogs, allow you to illustrate that you're the expert in your industry. We add an "Education" section to our e-newsletter with info such as "7 Tips – Maximise Your Linkedin Profile". Not only does it make us look good but it also stops readers from deleting our e-newsletters because they want to read the article later. Our stats show us that some people keep our e-newsletters in their Inbox for up to 3 months.
    5. Don't hard sell. If you're a service company don't hard sell your service. That's too much like spam.  Instead, encourage the reader to visit your website where you can provide additional information to help make your sale.
    6. Backlinks. Like social networks, the goal of your e-newsletter should be to encourage readers back to your website where you can make a better sales pitch using optimised landing page techniques.
    7. Subject, Titles and Calls to Action. The Subject, Titles and Calls to Action of your news items is super important because if it's interesting enough then people will click it to find out more.  The most successful email campaign we ever did (had a 76% conversion rate) was because we used a big red button that everyone wanted to click.
