    Our top 3 Google secrets

Google uses over 2000 variables to decide whether your website should be on the first page of search results. We worked out the top 3. However, before we get into that let's look at why it's important to get found on Google.

    Why Google?

There are over 234 billion websites on the internet and you need to get found because:

    • 74% of consumers use a search engine to find local retail or services. (Nielsen NetRatings, 2011)
    • Less than 30% of NZ businesses have websites (Idealog.co.nz, 2011)
    • Google owns 93% of the NZ search engine market share (Returnonnow.com, 2012)

    What does Google Offer?

Google offers two main options for promoting your website within their search engine:

    1. Organic listings (Search Engine Optimisation)
    2. Paid/Sponsored listings (Google AdWords)

Why do I need to be on page 1?

The probability of a customer clicking your website link significantly deteriorates after page 1. The graphic below shows where the majority of people are looking on page 1.

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website in search engines.

    Why is SEO important?

People use Google to search for products and services online. Google is the new Yellow Pages of the internet. SEO is the first step to running a successful AdWords campaign.

What are the 3 most important bits on a page to get found by Google?

    Title, Description and Opening Paragraph

The Title and Description are areas behind your web page called META data that help Google understand your website. They should contain words like your company name or your main services or products that people would search for. Your opening paragraph on your Home page should have exactly the same text as your META Description.

If you have a Content Management System the Title and Description are probably called something like Meta Title and Meta Description. If you can't find them ask your web people where they are.

Write a web page Title of 12 words or less.
